In India, the era of Cineplex (single screen cinema) continued till the advent of Multiplex (multi screen cinema). Thereafter, hardly any new Cineplex came into being, whereas every now & then one hears the conversion of existing Cineplex into Multiplex & launch of new Multiplex in ongoing retail & mall boom.

The era of Multiplex started in 1997 when Priya Village Roadshow (PVR) bought Anupam theatre in Saket, New Delhi, and revamped it and rechristened the theatre as PVR Anupam. With the launch of PVR Anupam in June 1997, the first Multiplex of India came into existence and the event became the first chapter of the Multiplex revolution in India.

Thereafter, the trend of Multiplexes, started by PVR Cinemas, became an instant hit and many other established & new players began their own Multiplex chains, like Fun Cinemas, Big Cinemas, Cinemax, Satyam Cineplexes, Wave Cinema, etc.

The Multiplex culture has been expanding rapidly, far & wide, from Metro cities to Tier 2 & 3 cities especially on account of providing superior ambience, high hygiene & the rich cinema experience and that too at affordable cost. The Multiplexes also offer the convenience of booking online movie tickets with home delivery and loyalty incentives.

If the popularity of the Multiplex culture continues like the present trend, the Cineplex culture may sooner than later become extinct.
